iPhone and a new cam!

So, the time has finally come. The new 3GB iPhone will finally be released in 18 days. I'm sure that I'll buy the 16GB version, but I dunno if I should buy it in white or black?

And then I want to start photography, I'm a total nub so I need your opinions on affordable cams? Please?

Do you want a Compact, Bridge or DSLR?

For what will you need your camera? Parties, Family Meetings, Art Photography, Sport,...?

I want to start serious photography and want to try it the first time on my London trip in autumn...

compact: Small camera for you shirtpocket. Usually 3x optical Zoom and max. 3'' Display
Bridge: intersection between DSLR and compact camera. Smaller than DSLR, but bigger than a compact camera. Often 12x optical zoom and some manual options.
